While attending seminary in Lexington, Kentucky, I worked as a clerk at a gas station. Kentucky has a lottery, which means that I would sell hundreds of dollars worth of PowerBall tickets when the jackpot would reach more than one hundred million dollars. The highest I can remember the jackpot reaching while I was working at the gas station was over 300 million dollars. One obvious occasional player sticks in my mind. Just before the cutoff time for the PowerBall drawing, a lady frantically came to the counter and handed me a fortune from a Chinese fortune cookie which had a series of numbers printed on the back of it. Anyone who has ever eaten at a Chinese buffet knows what I’m talking about. The lady had obviously eaten at a Chinese restaurant and after receiving her fortune thought it would be fun to use its numbers in the lottery. Apparently, her numbers were not too lucky because she did not win!

 

It is very easy for evangelism to become only about superficial, prideful numbers. Friends, the most important number is the number of people that come into or re-establish a relationship with Jesus Christ in or outside of Grace Church. I encourage you to focus on the number of people in your life that do not know Jesus Christ. Be aware of people in your daily routine that are not in a relationship with Christ and share your faith with them.

 

If we are seeking to create an inviting environment for the Holy Spirit then people will come. God is richly blessing Grace Church because we are actively seeking the Spirit in our worship and reaching the lost with the Good News.
